What is melanoma?
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. The name derives from melanocytes – skin cells, where the disease begins. Melanocytes are responsible for the production of melanin giving skin its color and protecting the deep layers of skin from ultraviolet rays (UV). When the skin is exposed to too much sunlight or ultraviolet light, the melanocytes might start to grow and become cancerous, which condition is referred to as melanoma.
